📍 Local Knowledge

Kawaihae Breakwater in Big Island is a fairly exposed reef break known for its reliable winter surf and consistent wave quality. The spot performs best when a west swell meets offshore winds from the northeast, creating clean conditions across both left and right reef breaks. Though surfable throughout various tide stages, it can draw a crowd when it's firing. Surfers should remain cautious of rips, submerged rocks, and sharks. January is typically the prime month for scoring clean, dependable waves at Kawaihae Breakwater.
