📍 Local Knowledge

Kapoho Bay on the Big Island is an exposed reef break that rarely comes to life, offering only occasional surf with no reliable seasonal window. When it does work, the best conditions occur with a southeast swell and offshore winds from the west-northwest, producing lefts and rights over the reef. Swell sources include both local windswells and distant groundswells, though quality sessions are infrequent. Despite its inconsistency, the break can get crowded when it's firing. Hazards include sharp reef, urchins, localism, and sharks. Winter, especially January, holds the best chance for clean, rideable waves.
