Kaalualu Point on the Big Island is an exposed reef break offering fairly consistent surf, with summer typically providing the most favorable conditions. The wave performs best when a southeast swell meets offshore winds from the northwest, although the break benefits from some shelter against northeast trades. A left-hand reef break dominates the setup, fueled primarily by long-period groundswells. While the spot sees minimal crowds, it presents several hazards, including sharp rocks, strong rips, urchins, and occasional localism. Although summer is generally ideal, January is often the prime month for scoring clean, rideable waves.
