Chocks on the Big Island is an exposed reef break that only works under the right conditions and is best surfed during the winter months. It performs optimally when a north-northwest swell meets offshore winds from the east-southeast, offering rare but clean rides. This spot is known for its solitude—crowds are uncommon, even on good days—making it a quiet escape for those in the know. While the lineup might be mellow, the reef itself is not: hazards include sharp rocks, strong rips, and sea urchins. January is typically the best time to catch Chocks at its cleanest.
