Blonde Reef on the Big Island is an exposed right-hand reef break known for its consistent surf, particularly during the winter months. It performs best when northeast swells meet offshore winds from the south, producing clean, powerful waves ideal for more experienced surfers. Groundswells dominate the swell profile, delivering solid wave energy across a sharp reef platform. While Blonde Reef isn’t always crowded, it can draw a solid lineup when conditions align. Surfers should be cautious of common hazards including urchins, rocks, localism, and sharks. Spring—especially May—typically offers the best chance for clean, rideable waves.
