This spot features a left-hand reef break fueled by an equal mix of local windswells and distant groundswells, with some protection available from south winds; however, it can get crowded when conditions are right, and the rocks are a significant hazard. The best conditions reported for surf at Santa Maria de Oia occur when a Northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southeast, and the best time of year for surfing with consistent clean waves (rideable swell with light / offshore winds) is the month of December.
