📍 Local Knowledge

Playa de Ondarreta (Pikua) in Pais Vasco is a sheltered point break that only works when conditions are just right, with winter being the optimal time for surfing. This spot features a left-hand point break primarily fueled by groundswells; while the tide has little effect on the surf quality, visitors should be aware that it is likely to be crowded when working, with density sometimes reaching hazardous levels that make a helmet advisable. The best conditions occur when a Northwest swell combines with South offshore winds, with January being the prime month for consistent, clean waves.
