Mundaka in Pais Vasco is a fairly exposed river break that offers consistent surf, although it is frequently flat during the summer months. This spot provides both left and right-hand waves—most famously the world-class left—primarily fueled by groundswells; while it provides some shelter from west winds and is best surfed at low tide on a falling tide, visitors should be prepared for heavy crowds and dangerous rip currents. The best conditions occur when a Northwest swell combines with South offshore winds, with January being the prime month for consistent, clean waves.
