📍 Local Knowledge

Mal Pais is an exposed beach break in Costa Rica that offers fun, rideable waves with a mellow temperament compared to heavier nearby breaks. It does best with offshore winds from the east, and tends to pick up groundswells coming from the west to southwest. The most favorable conditions occur when a west-to-southwest swell combines with clean offshore east winds. The break provides both left and right-hand waves over a forgiving shape. Crowds are moderate, especially when surf is good. Surfers should watch for rips and shifting sandbars. The best time for consistent, clean waves is during the Pacific swell season, particularly from May through September.
