📍 Local Knowledge

El Penón is an exposed beach break that favors consistent surf when conditions align. It works best with offshore winds from the east, and its ideal swell direction is from the south-southwest to southwest. The most favorable conditions occur when a strong southwest swell combines with clean offshore winds from the east. The break offers both left and right-hand waves over a sandy bottom and can produce solid, punchy surf. It can draw decent crowds during prime swells, so surfers should be mindful of lineup pressure as well as hazards like rips and shifting sandbars. The best time for consistent, clean waves is generally during the Pacific swell season, especially from May through September.
