Usal Beach in Mendocino County is a remote and exposed beach break known for its powerful and often heavy waves, especially during the fall and winter swell seasons. It picks up consistent northwest to west groundswells, performing best with offshore winds from the east or northeast. The break works across a range of tides but tends to be most favorable around mid to high tide. The bottom is primarily sand with some scattered rocks, which can shift seasonally and affect wave shape. Usal is rarely crowded due to its remote access and challenging approach. Surfers should be cautious of strong rip currents, cold water, and the rugged shoreline. The most consistent clean surf typically occurs from late fall through winter.
