📍 Local Knowledge
Tolowa Dunes State Park in Northern California is a mostly exposed beach break with fairly consistent surf year-round. It picks up a steady stream of northwest swells, with ideal swell from the west to northwest and offshore winds from the east to southeast. Waves break over a sand and rocks bottom, offering both left‑ and right‑hand beach peaks with occasional punchy closeouts. The spot works best at mid to high tide and is fully exposed, making early mornings ideal for cleaner conditions. Crowds are light due to its secluded location, but surfers should remain cautious of strong rip currents and cold water temperatures. Peak conditions arrive in winter—especially January—when swell consistency and wave quality are at their best.
