📍 Local Knowledge
The Ranch in Santa Barbara County is an exposed point and reef break with inconsistent surf, generally offering the best conditions in winter and spring. Offshore winds from the east to northeast help clean up south and southwest groundswells, producing both long lefts and occasional rights over the reef, adding variety and length to rides. The spot works across most tide stages—low to mid tide is often best—and remains uncrowded due to its secluded access by boat or entry from adjacent Ranch land. Surfers should watch out for sharp reef, boat traffic, and powerful rips. The most consistent clean waves occur during winter—especially in January and February—with the best months to surf typically being December through March.
