The Pit in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County is an exposed beach break with generally reliable but variable surf, offering both fast lefts and rights over a sandy bottom across all tide stages, with midday to high tide typically working best. Offshore winds from the east clean up northwest and west-northwest swells, producing crisp conditions appreciated by intermediate to advanced surfers. Despite its proximity to Morro Bay, the spot remains relatively uncrowded thanks to multiple peaks and a broad sandy shoreline. Surfers should watch out for occasional rip currents, kelp patches, and boat traffic. The most consistent clean waves hit during winterโespecially January and Februaryโwith solid surf also occurring in March and fun small summer sessions in July and August.
