📍 Local Knowledge

Sunset Beach in North Los Angeles County, just off Pacific Coast Highway near Pacific Palisades, is an exposed point and beach break over a mixed sand and rock bottom, offering soft, rolling waves ideal for beginners and longboarders—best conditions typically arrive in fall and winter. Offshore winds from the northeast clean up west and northwest swells, producing mostly right-hand waves that break along the inside reef and outer sandbars. The spot works best at mid to high tide and remains moderately crowded due to its accessibility and mellow wave quality. Surfers should watch out for submerged rocks, slippery entry points, and occasional rip currents. The most consistent clean waves occur in winter—especially December through February.
