Shelter Cove in Humboldt County is a remote and exposed surf spot that offers a mix of reef and beach breaks, with the most reliable waves coming during the winter months. It faces southwest, allowing it to pick up a wide range of swellsβespecially long-period groundswells from the west and northwest. The area handles a variety of conditions well but performs best with moderate swell and light offshore winds from the northeast. Multiple breaks exist here, with some offering long, peeling rights over reef and others producing more punchy, beach break-style peaks. Shelter Cove is rarely crowded due to its remote location and long drive from major cities. Hazards include sharp rocks, powerful rip currents, and the possibility of great white sharks. Winter, especially December through February, provides the most consistent and powerful surf.
