📍 Local Knowledge

Sand Spit in San Luis Obispo is an exposed sandbar break known for its dependable surf, particularly in the winter months. It performs best with clean northwest groundswells and offshore winds from the east-southeast. The sandbar produces both left- and right-hand waves and works well across all tide stages. Despite its reliability, the spot can get crowded when conditions are favorable. Hazards include urchins, rips, rocks, territorial locals, private property concerns, and sharks. The prime season for consistent, clean surf is winter, especially in January.
