San Clemente State Beach is a semi-exposed beach break with a sandy bottom, offering soft, rolling waves ideal for longboarding and beginner to intermediate surfers—best conditions typically arrive in summer and early fall. Offshore northeast winds clean up south and southwest swells, producing mellow lefts and rights that break over gently sloping sandbars. The spot works best at mid to high tide, which adds push to the otherwise forgiving waves. While generally uncrowded compared to nearby breaks, weekends can bring in a mix of campers and casual surfers. Watch for rip currents and shifting sandbars. The most consistent clean waves occur in summer, especially July through September.
