📍 Local Knowledge
Pelican State Beach in Humboldt County, California is an exposed beach break with fairly consistent surf year-round. It primarily picks up northwest swells, with ideal swell direction from the west and offshore winds from the east. The waves break over a sand and rock bottom, offering mostly beach break peaks with occasional punchy lefts and rights. It works best on mid to high tide and is fully exposed to wind, making early mornings the best window for cleaner conditions. Crowds are minimal due to its remote location, but surfers should watch for strong rip currents and cold water. Best conditions occur in winter, especially January, when swell consistency and quality are highest.
