📍 Local Knowledge

Old Man’s at Tourmaline in San Diego County—also known simply as “Tourmaline Surf Park” or “Old Man’s”—is an exposed reef-to-sandbreak that’s famous for its mellow, longboard‑friendly waves and high beginner appeal. It works year‑round, though it truly shines in winter when west‑northwest swells meet offshore winds from the east or northeast. Popular and often crowded—especially with longboarders—Old Man’s draws a friendly mix of intermediate riders and learners. Hazards include occasional crowds, submerged rocks in the reef zone, and localism in the lineup. Winter, and notably January, usually offer the most consistent, clean surf.
