📍 Local Knowledge

Mitchell's Cove in Santa Cruz is a sheltered reef and point break with reliable surf, especially during winter and most often in January. It performs best when northwest swells meet offshore northeast winds and is most favorable around a rising low tide. Groundswells are more common here, and the spot can get crowded when it's working. Hazards include rips, rocks, and territorial locals. In January, clean surfable waves occur about 31% of the time, while 39% of days are blown out and 30% are typically too small for most surfers but may suit beginners.
