📍 Local Knowledge

Mad River Beach in Humboldt County is a fairly exposed beach break that rarely offers good surf and lacks a consistent seasonal pattern. It works best on distant groundswells from the northwest with offshore winds from the east. The wave setup includes both left and right-handers, with optimal conditions around high tide as it begins to rise. Crowds are uncommon, even when the surf is up. Hazards include sharks, sea urchins, rip currents, and rocks. The most reliable clean conditions typically occur in winter, especially in January.
