Indicators in Santa Cruz is a sheltered point break with reasonably consistent surf, best during winter and particularly in January. It performs optimally when a west-northwest swell aligns with offshore winds from the east-northeast, benefiting from some shelter against northwest winds. Groundswells are more frequent than windswells. The spot is often crowded, and heavy crowds can make surfing hazardous.
