Hammerland in Los Angeles County is an exposed breakwater break that offers good surf at all stages of the tide, with summer providing the favored conditions for surfing. It works best when offshore winds blow from the east-northeast, and it typically receives distant groundswells with the ideal swell direction from the west. The spot is rarely crowded but comes with hazards such as rips, obstacles, locals, and pollution. The best conditions occur when a west swell combines with offshore winds from the east-northeast. Overall, winter—especially January—is the best time of year for consistent, clean waves at Hammerland.
