📍 Local Knowledge

Gray Whale Cove in San Mateo is an exposed beach break known for its very consistent surf, working well throughout the year. It performs best with distant groundswells from the west and offshore winds from the east, producing both left and right-hand waves. The break is reliable across all tide stages, and while offering quality surf, it remains rarely crowded. Winter—especially January—provides the most consistent clean conditions with light offshore winds. Surfers should be cautious of rip currents and sharks. Optimal surf occurs when a west swell combines with easterly offshore winds.
