Goat Rock in Sonoma is an exposed beach break that doesn't work very often, but when it does, it can offer quality surf with minimal crowds. It performs best with groundswells from the southwest and offshore winds from the northeast, with some shelter from northwest winds. The break features both left and right-hand waves and is most reliable around low tide. Winter, particularly January, offers the most consistent clean conditions with light offshore winds. Surfers should be cautious of rips and sharks. Optimal surf occurs when a southwest swell aligns with northeasterly offshore winds.
