📍 Local Knowledge
Francis Beach in San Mateo is an exposed beach break with fairly consistent surf year-round, offering both left and right-handers. It works best with groundswells from the west and offshore winds from the east, particularly around high tide. While winter—especially January—delivers the most consistent clean waves, the spot can work in any season. Unlike more remote beaches nearby, Francis Beach is fairly popular and can get crowded at times. Surfers should be mindful of rips and occasional shark activity. Optimal conditions occur when a west swell aligns with easterly offshore winds.
