📍 Local Knowledge

El Porto in Los Angeles County is a beach break with consistent surf throughout the year, with the best swells arriving in winter, capable of holding waves up to double-overhead. The ideal swell directions range from northwest to west-northwest, often enhanced by Southern Hemisphere swells for optimal wave shape. However, southwest swells are largely blocked by the Palos Verdes Peninsula and southern Channel Islands, and too much one-directional swell can cause the waves to close out. The break offers both lefts and rights and works best around mid tide. It is likely to be crowded when the surf is good, and surfers should be cautious of pollution. The best conditions occur when a southwest swell combines with offshore winds from the east. Overall, autumn, particularly October, is the prime season for consistent, clean waves at El Porto.
