📍 Local Knowledge

Sombrio Beach on Vancouver Island is a fairly exposed beach and reef break offering consistent surf throughout the year. It works best with offshore winds from the north-northeast and receives a healthy mix of groundswells and windswells, with the ideal swell direction from the west. The waves offer a variety of lefts and rights, and the break is surfable at all tide stages. While it can get crowded at times, especially on good days, surfers should be aware of hazards including rocks and a sometimes territorial local scene. The best conditions occur when a west swell aligns with N-NE offshore winds, with the most consistent clean waves arriving in autumn, particularly in October.
