Toulhars is a fairly sheltered beach break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong south or southwest swell combines with offshore winds from the north or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of local windswells or Atlantic swells that wrap into the Lorient roadstead, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the sandy shoreline that can become quite punchy when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a popular urban spot for locals in Larmor-Plage, the lineup usually remains manageable when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and submerged rocks near the headlands. The best conditions reported for surf at Toulhars occur when a Southwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the North-northeast.
