St Pabu is a fairly exposed beach break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the south or southeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the sandy shoreline of the Aber Benoît mouth that can become quite punchy when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a popular destination for locals in the Ploudalmézeau area, the expansive dunes and beach usually allow for a manageable lineup even when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and shifting sandbars near the estuary. The best conditions reported for surf at St Pabu occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the South-southeast.
