Gâvres in Brittany is a fairly exposed beach break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong south or southwest swell combines with offshore winds from the north or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the long, sandy shoreline that can become quite punchy and hollow when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a well-known spot near Lorient, the expansive nature of the beach usually allows for a manageable lineup even when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and shifting sandbars, especially near the entrance to the harbor. The best conditions reported for surf at Gâvres occur when a Southwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the North-northeast.
