The beach offers both left and right-hand waves from a mix of groundswells and windswells; however, it is a fairly popular spot that can sometimes get crowded, and surfers must watch out for dangerous rips. The best conditions reported for surf at Matalascañas occur when a Southwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northeast, and the best time of year for surfing Matalascañas with consistent clean waves (rideable swell with light / offshore winds) is the month of December.
